Monument to Peter I Mounted in Rostov

The new monument to Peter I was installed in Bogatyanovsky descent. Peter is portrayed in Russian caftan (a type of coat), a Cossack chief is next to him. According to the design of the monument’s creator, a member of the Russian Academy of Arts, Sergey Oleshnya, the Russian tsar stands on stones, which initially covered the bank of the Don river. His arm is extended to a vessel with water from Bogaty well – that is the former name of Bogatyanovsky spring.

Bogatyanovsky spring was opened after major renovation in mid-June. The brickwork was completed then, and the spring basin made of granite was installed. Also, there are flowerpots with plants and benches near the monument.

According to the website of the Russian Academy of Arts, Sergey Oleshnya also authored monuments to Elizabeth of Russia, founders of the Temernitskaya customs house, founders of the Fortress of St Dimitry of Rostov and many others.

According to the official website of local tourism, in 1695, Peter I went past the spring and stopped to drink some water from it. After that, the tsar called it a rich well (Bogaty kolodez in Russian). After the successful Siege of Azov and seizure of the fortress, the spring received that name.
