Mosaic mural on the building of the Puppet Theater

Right in front of you is a building of the Puppet Theater and its mosaic mural created in 1967 by artists Vitaly Korobov and Gennady Snesarev, whom you already know. Both artists are graduates of the Stroganov School, Moscow, which speaks well for their high level of excellence. This work is the first mosaic mural in Rostov-on-Don. The picture features characters from fairy-tales for children – Buratino, Boy-Kibalchish and others. Their images are stylized, decorative, rich in color and subject and are designed to be perceived at close range. The mural turns the wide pavement of Universitetsky Lane into a makeshift outdoor lobby in front of the entrance to the building. It is an exceptionally advantageous specimen of fully functional monumental painting - it decorates not only the architectural element, but also the surrounding urban space. This art work is cited in Soviet books on art of the 1970s, which is illustrative of its high artistic value. In 2020, thanks to the efforts of social activists, the building of the Puppet Theater, together with the mosaics, was recognized as a regional cultural heritage site.
