Aleksandr Isaakiyevich Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008), a writer, a public and political figure.
The writer’s childhood and youth are connected with the city of Rostov-on-Don. He graduated from the Department of Physics and Mathematics of the Rostov State University.
In 1970, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature “for the ethical force with which he has pursued the indispensable traditions of Russian literature”.
Besides his artistic literary works, he became widely known for his historic and publicistic works on Russia’s history of the 19th and 20th centuries.
His major works are The Gulag Archipelago, Cancer Ward, The First Circle and others.
