State M.A. Sholokhov’s Preserve Museum:

The state M.A. Sholokhov’s preserve museum is situated to the north of Rostov region. The preserve museum complex comprises 16 historic and architectural monuments. The museum territory also features 5 nature and 265 archeological monuments. The preserve museum protected landscape zone consists over 40 000 hectares. The landscape-preserve zone is 3 820 hectares. The distance fr om village Veshenskaya to Rostov-on-Don is 364 km. The distance from village Veshenskaya to Moscow is 998 km.

The M.A. Sholokhov’s preserve museum, established in 1984, is the only museum in Russia dedicated to the Great Russian writer of the 20th century, who was twice honored by the Hero of the Socialistic Labor title, and winner of various literature awards, a Nobel Prize winner. The preserve museum is unique, as it saves all the memorabilia, related to the writer’s creative work and life. The museum collection comprises over 70 thousand items, the majority of them being authentic articles that belonged to the writer and his family. The museum exposition preserves and displays practically all the domestic and personal items, cherished by the Sholokhov’s family.

The preserve museum complex comprises 4 memorial houses, wh ere the writer lived and created his works in different years.

One of the preserve museum featuring themes is dedicated to the Cossacks, their habits and ways, labor and military service.

The Don upper-current nature, depictured in Sholokhov’s works, can be still easily recognized in the area. The preserve museum protected area comprises over 40 thousand hectares of unique, ecologically clean landscapes.

The museum exposition most valuable displays are the originals, such as the handwritten works by Sholokhov, his library, memorabilia that belonged to the writer and his family, Sholokhov’s works, published in the variety of world languages, collection of authentic illustrations of the Sholokhov’s books, and first editions of his works. The visitors and researchers also pay interest to the gathering of references, referring to the Don Cossacks history at the end of 19th – beginning of the 20th century.
