The Ataman Palace Museum:

The Ataman Palace was erected in Novocherkassk by the academic of architecture I.O. Valprede's project in 1863, as the official residence of the Don Cossack Army Atamans. The palace interiors feature luxurious decoration, as the palace was intended to welcome the royalties during the visits at the Don land. The first royal visitor within the palace walls was Prince Nikolay Alexandrovich. The palace was decorated by the cast iron grand staircase of fair figure casting especially for this occasion in October 1863. The grand hall and the boudoir were supplemented with luxurious fireplaces decorated with gray Italian marble.

The other royalties to visit the Ataman palace were Emperors Alexander II (in 1872), Alexander III (in 1869, 1870, 1872, 1887), Nikolay II (in 1887, 1914).

The palace-museum grand opening was held September 9, 2005, and was devoted to the town of Novocherkassk 200th anniversary.

The interiors exposition at the palace second floor is reconstructed up to the beginning of 20th century. The palace walls are decorated with Don Cossack Atamans' portraits, various interior articles. The visitors can see applied arts items and paintings, that belonged to the last Don Cossack Army ataman, General M.N. Grabbe (1916—March 2, 1917).

One of the palace halls features the memorial exposition, dedicated to the first elected Don Cossack ataman of the 20th century - general A.M. Kaledin, who shot himself in the head in the palace on January 29, 1918, at the very beginning of the Civil war.
